Research that starts with a real problem.

Every degree here ends in supervised, examined work. The labs, the placements and the port outside the gate are what that work is done on.

What research means here.

Research at NUTM is not yet a separate institute with its own budget line. It is the top of the teaching pyramid: a supervised final-year project in every bachelor's degree, an examined capstone in every master's, and adjunct academics who hold research posts at Oxford, MIT, Stanford, Penn, Chicago, Rochester and Worcester Polytechnic.

We would rather describe that accurately than claim a publication record we cannot yet show you. What follows is what exists, where it happens, and what is still being built.

Two people in conversation on campus
Supervision is a conversation rather than a queue.

Where the work concentrates.

Four areas, drawn from what the two faculties actually teach and what the district around us actually needs.

  • Applied security

Incident response, digital forensics and infrastructure hardening, worked in the cybersecurity lab against scripted intrusions rather than described in a lecture.

  • Data and applied machine learning

Models trained on imported data fail here in specific, well-understood ways. Treating that as a first-class technical problem is the point of the MSc Data Science capstone.

  • Operations and logistics

The campus sits inside Nigeria's largest container port. Congestion, customs and informality are observable at scale on the other side of the wall.

  • Market-creating innovation

Drawn from the Clayton Christensen Institute's work and tested against ventures students are actually building, not against supplied cases.

The labs.

Purpose-built teaching space where the exercise-driven half of each degree happens.

  • Cybersecurity lab

Configured for live incident-response exercises. Students work in teams against a scripted intrusion and are assessed on how they reason about an adversary, not on which tool they reach for.

  • Computing labs

General computing and networking space supporting the three bachelor's degrees in the Faculty of Computing & Science from the foundation year onward.

  • Venture design lab

Runs in the third year of every undergraduate degree in both faculties. Live briefs, real customers, and permission to abandon the first idea.

Publications.

NUTM does not yet maintain a public index of published work, and we are not going to assemble a plausible-looking one. Our adjunct academics publish under their home institutions: Oxford, MIT, Stanford, Penn, Chicago, Rochester, Wellesley, Worcester Polytechnic and the University of Ghana. Their records are held there.

A NUTM-affiliated publications index is in development. Until it exists, this page will keep saying so.

Partnerships, placements and live briefs all start with the same conversation.
