How academic staff are appointed and promoted.

Every appointment and promotion at NUTM, from Lecturer II to Professor, is scored the same way: scholarship, teaching, leadership and service, community development and alignment with our core values, weighted by the career track you choose.

The self-assessment below applies those rules to the record you enter and tells you which rank you can be considered for, and what stands between you and the next one. It is an estimate. The Appointments and Promotions Committee verifies every claim against evidence before anything is decided.

Three tracks, one standard.

Choose the track that fits how you work. The same 400-point framework applies to each, weighted differently.

  • Research

Up to two courses a year. Scholarship carries 330 of the 400 points, and the publication expectations are the highest, with the focus on Q1 journals.

  • Research and teaching

Three or four courses a year. Teaching quality carries the most weight, alongside a steady record in Q1 and Q2 journals.

  • Teaching

Five or more courses a year. Teaching excellence leads, supported by pedagogical research and textbooks.

The gaps listed are for this rank.

What happens after you apply.

  1. Step 01

    Departmental review

Your department's A&PC checks every claim against the evidence you attach and recommends to the college.

  2. Step 02

    College review

The college A&PC audits a sample of the claims and forwards its recommendation to the Central A&PC.

  3. Step 03

    Central approval

The Central A&PC, chaired by the Vice-Chancellor, gives final approval for every rank from Lecturer II to Professor.

  4. Step 04

    External assessment, for professors

Associate Professor and Professor candidates who meet the minimums are assessed by two or three external professors, at least one from outside Nigeria, before the Governing Council decides.

Meeting the minimum criteria makes you eligible to be considered. It does not guarantee appointment or promotion.
